We did a report on the Chumash Indians. Some of the foods the Chumash ate were acorns, pinenuts, cherries, seeds, berries, deer, small game, fish and waterfowl. The Chumash had well constructed houses and they were round like an oven. They put poles across each other and put grass on the poles to make their homes. Some houses were 50 feet across. The Chumash lived in villages along the California coast, near where Santa Barbara is today. The Chumash gathered pieces of the redwood they found washed up along the shore. Then they split the wood into boards to build the canoes. The Chumash used tar for sealing their canoes. They also used tar to seal the baskets to make them waterproof. They were the finest boat builders among California Indians. This was the Chumash's life.
