The name of this mission San Buenaventura. It is very near Santa Barbara. It was founded on March 31,1782 by Father Junipero Serra. Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo first visited the western coast of North America in 1545.

The name of the tribe at the mission was Chumash. The region of the tribe was the central coast. They lived in houses shaped like ovens. Some of their food were acorns, cherries, seeds, pinenuts, berries, deer, and fish. They were famous boat builders.

At the mission the Indians work was whatever the padres said they had to do. At Mission San Buenaventura the padres taught the Indians about Christianity and how to speak Spanish.

The mission was taken away by the Mexican government in 1834. Now they have it as a Church and a museum. They had to rebuild the mission a lot of times because it burned down.
