Mission San Diego was founded in July 16, 1769 by Father Junipero Serra. It is in San Diego, California on the southern coast of our state. The California Native American tribe that lived at this mission was the Ipai Indians which are like the Gabrielino. They lived differently before they came to the mission. They hunted small game and fished. After they came to the mission they farmed and constructed adobe builings. The padres taught them about Christianity and how to speak Spanish. The mission closed down in 1834 because the Mexican government took over. Restoration began in 1931. Today people go to the church and tourists come to visit the mission.
