Room 31's Study of theMission San Gabriel Arcángel |
|
The Gabrielinos were the tribe that lived at the mission. Before coming to the mission the Indians hunted for their food. They made their houses with bundles of tule reed. At the mission they worked taking care of livestock. The padres would protect the Indians. The problem is some of the Indians ran away from the mission. The mission was taken over by the Mexican government in 1834 and the mission and everything they owned was sadly taken from the Franciscans. President Buchanan gave the run down mission to the Catholic Church in 1859. The mission is now a tourist attraction. |
