Mission San Luis Obispo was founded in September 1, 1772 by Father Junipero Serra. It is in San Luis Obispo, California on the northern central coast of our state. The California Native American tribe that lived at this mission was Chumash. They lived differently before they came to the mission because they ate cherries, seeds, small game, and fish. After they came to the mission they built adobe homes and learned Spanish and Christianity from the padres. The mission closed down in 1834 because the Mexican government took over. Now the mission is rebuilt and people come visit it. Mission San Luis Obispo vineyards help make California one of the leading wine producers in the world.
