The name of the tribe that lived at the mission is called the Gabrielino.Their region was the southern coast of California. Their life style before coming to the mission was that they had to hunt for their own food, and make their homes out of tule reeds. Their main food came from the sea. They ate fish like tuna, swordfish, sea mammals, sea birds, mussel, and salmon. The work the Indians did at the mission was farming and building adobe houses. The padres at the mission taught the Indians to speak Spanish. Mission San Juan Capistrano was taken over in 1834 by the Mexican government. Later the mission was restored and today tourists come to visit. |
