The name of the tribe that was by it is Costanoan. The Costanoan tribe lived on the coast of northern California. Their houses were made out of poles covered with grass, tule reed and ferns. Other things about the Costanoans, were that they ate bear, deer, fish and small game. In the middle of their houses they had a fire place, and they made nice baskets. The Indians did all the work at the mission. There was no blacksmithing or ranching done there at that time. The padres taught the Indians how to speak Spanish and about Christianity. There was too much violence going on. In 1834 it closed down because there was too much trouble going on. Another reason it closed down was because one of the Indians killed a padre. I learned that in 1840 and 1857 there was an earthquake that made the mission fall down. What's happening today is that they built a new church 200 feet from the old church that was destroyed in 1840 and 1857. Many tourists visit the mission every year. |

Costanoan was the name of the tribe at the mission. In their village they had assembly houses or dance houses. The assembly house could be big enough to hold up to 200 people. They hunted deer and made baskets. At the mission the padres taught Christianity to the Indians. The Indians learned Spanish and built adobe houses. Mission Santa Cruz got closed down because the Mexican government took over in 1834. Today tourists visit the Mission. This is all I learned about Mission Santa Cruz. |

The name of the tribe at Santa Cruz mission was Costanoan. Their tribe is near the coast. What they did before coming to the mission is they hunted and fished. The work that the Indians did at the mission was that they built adobe buildings and worked in the fields. The padres gave medicine to the sick people. They had problems when the mission was located too close to another settlement. So there was violence. In 1834 the mission was controlled by the Mexican government. The church was destroyed in the mid 1800's. Later the mission was rebuilt and today tourists visit Mission Santa Cruz. |
