Room 31's Study of theMission Santa Inés |
|
The Indians at Mission Santa Ines were Chumash. They lived on the central coast of California Their life style before coming to the mission was they ate pine nuts, seeds, roots, deer, and acorns. The Chumash built dome shaped houses. At the mission the Indian men worked out in the field and they also learned about Christianity. On December 21, 1812 an earthquake struck Mission Santa Ines. Mission Santa Ines closed down because the government took over in 1834. Our class read a book about a young Yokut girl named Pasquala who lived in the Santa Ines Mission. Her mother and father died from diseases. She risked her life to save the mission from an Indian attack. In 1904 the new mission pastor with the help of his niece spent the next 20 years restoring the mission to much of its original beauty. At the mission today tourists come to visit. |
