Room 31's Study of theMission San Francisco de Asís |
|
The tribe was Costanoans. The tribe lived on the northern coast of California. Before they came to the mission they would burn down their houses in a year or two and build new ones. The Costanoans ate bear, deer, fish, and small game. They also wove beautiful baskets. At the mission the Indians either worked at farming or learned Christianity and Spanish from the padres. Most Indians got sick from the Spanish diseases and some even died. Some Indians tried to run away because the padres weren't treating them right. The Mexican government took over the mission in 1834 because there was too much violence. Other problems were that the Indians weren't used to the lifestyle. They weren't immune to the diseases and got sick so they died. Today it has been carefully preserved and is the oldest intact building in San Francisco. |
